This session explores the notion and value of presence in coaching conversations and is unique in considering both coach and client perspectives. It summarises the recent doctoral research undertaken by Roger Noon at Oxford Brookes University. Since Roger is a practicing coach, the research is derived from a desire to improve his personal practice and learn more about what contributes to both effective coaching and an effective coaching relationship. For those who see these two aspects as synonymous, the findings will no doubt resonate with your experience and also extend your appreciation of a phenomenon that is seen as fundamental to the coaching process yet is currently undervalued as a relational factor.

Whilst presence might be viewed as tacit and nebulous, this session will present a practical, accessible conceptual model that distils its nature by mapping the experience of coach and client research participants in a way that provides new insights and proposes a richer language than has existed previously. As a result, practitioners will be better able to recognise the experience of presence in themselves and their clients, which will contribute to their ability to develop more powerful coaching relationships.

Bio

Dr Roger Noone is an executive coach and independent change management consultant currently involved in culture change and conduct & ethics work in blue-chip banking organisations. He also coaches in the healthcare, education and entrepreneurial SME sectors. He holds a Masters in Executive Coaching from Ashridge Business School and a Doctorate in Coaching and Mentoring from Oxford-Brookes University.
